SAN MATEO, CA -- San Mateo police are looking for a man who they say committed lewd acts on a 10-year-old girl.

The incident took place inside the Barnes & Noble bookstore on West Hillsdale Boulevard on Sunday June 23 at about 3 p.m. Although the attack took place on June 23, it was not reported by the girl’s family for two weeks, said Sgt. Ryan Monaghan, a San Mateo police spokesman. Monaghan could not comment on why the family delayed in making the report.

According to authorities, the suspect approached the victim while she was in the children's book section and then led her to a more secluded corner of the store. The suspect then exposed himself and had inappropriate contact with the victim.

Monaghan said police have received “multiple tips,” but investigators have not identified a suspect. They’re hoping video taken of the suspect captured on the store’s surveillance cameras will help them make an arrest.

The suspect is described as a white male in his 50s, approximately 6'0" tall, wearing a fishing hat, sunglasses, and tan cargo pants. He was last seen getting into a dirty black or grey four-door car parked in the store parking lot.

Anyone with information is urged to contact the San Mateo Police Department Investigations Bureau at 650-522-7650 or the San Mateo Police Department Secret Witness hotline at 650-522-7676.
